What Do You Suppose They’re Doing? By Alex Scheiwe, 6th Grade There are some sports that few people play that you might consider for birthday parties or just family activities: dirtboarding, croquet, cricket, and archery. To make a dirtboard, you take apart a skateboard and keep the deck (the board). You can take old backpack straps and drill them into the deck. Then you will be ready to board down wet ice plant for experts or a 10 degree to 20 degree dirt hill for beginners. Dirtboarding is great because you can do it by yourself or with your friends. To play croquet, you should buy a set, but you can also use sledgehammers for clubs, any type of ball, and sticks for wickets. You play by hitting the ball through the wickets. You go to the end and then all the way back to the beginning. Croquet is fun to play with 4 to 8 players. You play on greenbelts or flat land, preferably grass. Cricket is kind of like baseball. You have a circle about as big as a baseball diamond. In the circle you put three wickets directly across from each other. In front of the wickets you have a circle. One person stands in a circle ready to run, while another person is batting. If the batter hits the ball "anywhere" out of the big circle in the air, it counts as 8 points. If they hit it out on the ground, it is 4 points. If the batter misses the ball and it knocks down wickets, it is an out. You also get outs by catching the ball or hitting down the wickets before the batter reaches the other circle. Professional games can go on for over three days, while kid games should go on for only a couple hours. According to PDL sixth grader Kirby Lochner, "I think it’s really fun, and it’s more fun if you have about six people on each team". Archery is a fancy way to say you are shooting a bow and arrow. Archery is an individual sport. There are many important aspects and you need quite a few items for archery, such as a bow, arrows, targets, about three bales of hay, an archery glove, and a quiver. You use the hay as a backstop for the targets. For targets you can use paper targets, balloons, and even pumpkins. You use the archery glove so you don’t get rashes. The quiver is the contraption you put the arrows in. There are three feathers on an arrow, and the one feather that is a different color should always point toward you. First, you make sure that the arrow is in the right direction. Then you attach the nock of the arrow to the string on the bow. After that, you put the arrow in the slot (and if there isn’t one, you tilt the arrow to the side of the bow to put it in a good shooting position) and aim for your target. Finally, and best of all, is the shooting part when you watch your arrow soar through the air!
