The Race For '08By Ben Szurek, 5th Grade You might be wondering who will be a good president if he (or she) is elected. Ms. Mary Alice Lamb, the organizer of WNC for Obama, and Mr. Robert Brown, the NC volunteer coordinator for John McCain's campaign were interviewed for this article. Ms. Lamb decided to support Obama because she believes he is a great leader and has an exceptional ability to bring people together. When asked what she thought were some things he would change if he was elected president she responded, “The first thing I think he will change is that I believe he will motivate Americans to get up off the couch, turn off the t. v., and become more involved in volunteering, democracy, and serving their countries.” She also believes he will have major health care reform passed in our country by the end of his first term, so that health care is more affordable for those who need it. Ms. Lamb thinks that Obama has an important edge over the other candidates because he has worked as a community organizer (somebody who organizes meetings in a community). She says our parents should vote for him because he is the only major candidate in either party who had the judgment to tell the country that going into Iraq and starting this war was a bad idea. She thinks that his most powerful competition in his party is a feeling, not a person; cynicism to be exact (cynicism is a feeling when people don't have hope). According to Mr. Brown (McCain's volunteer coordinator in Chapel Hill ), the characteristics that drew him to McCain were his honor, his integrity, and his service to his country. According to McCain's campaign web page, he wants to lead the U.S. to win the war against Islamic extremists, reform health care for all Americans, and reform the government. Specifically McCain wants to bring government spending under control, keep taxes low, and reform the too complex tax code. He also wants to modernize Social Security, Medicare (which is government health care for the elderly) and Medicaid (government health care for the poor). Mr. Brown said that he thinks Mike Huckabee is McCain's most powerful competition in his party because of his ability to connect with voters. He thinks our parents should vote for McCain because ”he has a consistent, conservative approach to handling issues. He is a man of high integrity who places service to the country over personal ambition. He has the experience required to make the changes we need so badly in Washington .” (Published 2/8/08)
